As infrastructure gets old and outdated, it must be modernized and upgraded to ensure operational efficiency and safety. In projects of this context, we often partner with general contractors to ensure the prosperity of the end-user.

In this project spotlight, we will dive into the work our team completed on Catalina Island, just off the coast of Southern California. The job was completed by partnering with a General Contractor (GC) to upgrade instrumentation at 11 remote sites.

Challenges

The upgrades were imperative as the following were not operating to their full potential:

  • Transmitters were at their “end-of-life” cycle.
  • The SCADA System was becoming obsolete.
  • Additional historization was needed for proper monitoring and data acquisition.

Outdated instrumentation hinders data collection and process control which makes it difficult to be compliant with safety standards and regulations.

Key Players

Collaborative Approach

The execution of this project required extensive assessment, planning, and collaboration between all the key players. The synergy between teams ensured a hassle-free implementation.

The tasks were as follows:

Synergy between all parties involved allowed for a seamless implementation.

  • Equipment was mobilized to remote sites.
  • Our team coordinated with the General Contractor’s (GC) workflow.
  • Mechanical contractors installed new plumbing and instrumentation.
  • Electrical Contractor (Lighthouse Electrical) installed all cable and conduit.
  • ICAD’s tasks:
      • Validated instrumentation (flow transmitters, pressure transmitters, flow totalizers, ratio controllers).
      • Modified local program logic for additional monitoring and alarms.
      • Installed Advantech Panel PC.
      • Installed new server for SQL database management.
      • Updated Wonderware monitoring, alarming, and historization.
      • Validated holistic system operation with contracted Customer Site Representative (CSR).
  • ICAD co-developed the Operation and Maintenance Manual (O&M) with the GC.
  • ICAD provided on-site training for the operator, ensuring smooth transition and addressing any concerns promptly.
Results

The experience, structured collaboration, and innovative solutions from all the key players resulted in the following:

Updated instrumentation met regulatory requirements.

  • Updated instrumentation accuracy to meet safety standards and regulatory requirements.
  • Increased life expectancy of the control system.
  • New alarming for improved maintenance response time.
  • Additional monitoring and historization for preventative maintenance.
  • Real-time data availability improved decision-making.
  • Interdisciplinary coordination for holistic project success and customer satisfaction.
